Vlad and his mom have been in the hospital for almost four months. During this time, he has matured a lot. Sometimes, he asks, “Mom, what are my white blood cells?”.
The most challenging time for him was when he could not go outside and socialize with other children in the first few weeks. Now, if the tests are regular, the boy can do it. It is the greatest joy for Vlad. Sometimes, his father joins him on these walks on the hospital grounds, but he always wears a mask.
Most of all, Vlad dreams of recovering and performing a symbolic ritual when he is discharged — ringing the winner’s bell that hangs at the exit of the ward. In the meantime, he is a little sad when his hospital friends are discharged.
