Sofia spent almost three weeks in intensive care at Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, fighting for her life. Her mother stayed by her side from early morning until late evening — as long as hospital rules allowed.
“I couldn’t hold her in my arms, so I just kept talking to her, telling her what we would do once she got better,” recalls Aliona, Sofia’s mother.
Once her condition stabilized, chemotherapy began. And in September, Sofia underwent surgery to remove the tumor.
Through this fight, the little girl has learned to smile — and she lights up whenever the doctors she now knows walk into the room.
The diagnosis came as a huge shock to the family. Neither prenatal ultrasounds nor postnatal check-ups had shown any sign of serious illness.
“But we pulled ourselves together and started fighting, because children feel our spirit,” says mother.
