Hematologic malignancies not always can be successfully treated by chemotherapy and radiation. Patients are often appointed bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The likelihood that the parents of a patient can be a donor for their child is not higher than 3-5%. In Ukraine, bone marrow transplantation is performed only from related donors. Every year in Ukraine about 300 bone marrow transplantations from unrelated compatible donors are given to minors alone. In such cases Ukrainian patients have no other choice but start looking for money to pay for the treatment abroad.
Fundraising is not the only objective of the Fund; its employees and doctors communicate with foreign colleagues, send them statements and results of examinations, look for foreign clinics for children, and discuss the treatment tactics with specialists. In 2016, we sent 15 children to get treatment abroad.
